Neville Brody

Gerard Unger, a graphic designer and type designer from the Netherlands, got his start at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. He has taught typography and visual communication at several universities in Europe, including The University of Reading and University of Leiden. He has done work as a free lance designer since 1975, designing various print work. He was awarded the H.N.Werkman-prize, Gravise-prijs, and Maurits Enschedé-Prize. He continues to lecture abroad about his work and related topics.

Originating from Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Barry Deck graduated from Northern Illinois University. He had done work with Lipmon & Simmons and Kim Abrams Design. In 1989, Barry Deck received his MFA in Visual Communications from the California Institute of the Arts, where he worked with Ed Fella and Lorraine Wild. In 1995, he set up his own company, Dysmedia, working with big name companies such as VH1 and Pepsi.

Paul Elliman was born in London, England. His work combines typography with technology. He has showcased at the Tate Modern, New York’s New Museum of Contemporary Art, Kunsthalle Basel, Victoria and Albert Museum, and Anyang Public Art Project.  He currently works as a visiting critic for the Yale’s University School of Art.

Rick Vermeulen

Born in Schiedam, Netherland, Rick Vermeulen studied design at Rotterdam Academy. After graduation, he worked for publisher Bert Bakker and participated with a group called Rotterdam’s Graphic Workshop. He worked as an editor of Hard Werken magazine, with the likes of Henk Elenga, Gerard Hadders, and Tom van den Haspel. Eventually, he moved to the United States, after teaching at Cranbook, CalArts, and North Carolina State University. He moved back to the Netherlands.

Phil Bicker

Phil Bicker, based in London, is a creative director, designer, and photo editor that has worked for a variety of industries. He has done art direction for The Face of London, Creative Magazine, Vogue Hommes International. He has also worked for Calvin Klein, BBH, and The Fader. He currently pours his work into Magnum Photos and Time magazine.

Tobias Frere-Jonas, a New York native, received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. He is most well-known for his work at Font Bureau (Boston), where he worked as a senior designer for about seven years, creating typefaces such as Interstate and Poynter Oldstyle and Gothic. He left the company to move back to New York to collaborate with Jonathan Hoefler, a partnership that still exists today. Together the two have worked on projects for groups, including The Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart Living, Nike, Pentagram, GQ, Esquire, The New Times, Business 2.0, and The New York Times Magazine. Frere-Jones was also the first American to be honored the Gerrit Noordzij Prize for his typographic work and contributions to the type community.
